When the US Women's football team missed out on a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, it seemed like only a matter of time until Donald Trump would come out of the woodworks and have his say on the matter.

Well, it seems we didn't have to wait too long with the former US President absolutely unloading on the team just a matter of hours after they clinched bronze with a win over the Australian Matildas.

Trump released a statement in the wake of the USA's 4-3 victory in the third-place play-off, referring to the leaders of the team as "wokesters" while refusing to congratulate them for even getting on the podium.

"If our soccer team, headed by a radical group of leftist maniacs, wasn't woke, they would have won the gold medal instead of the bronze," his statement read.

"Woke means you lose, everything that is woke goes bad, and our soccer team certainly has. There were, however, a few patriots standing.

"Unfortunately, they need more than that respecting our country and national anthem. They should replace the wokesters with patriots and start winning again.

"The woman with the purple hair played terribly and spends too much time thinking about radical left politics and not doing her job!"

There's no prizes for guessing who Trump is referring to when he says "the woman with the purple hair".

US footballer and team leader Megan Rapinoe has never shied away from publicly criticising Trump and everything he stands for, even dubbing herself "a walking protest" for the former US President.

From bringing awareness to LGBTQI communities to taking a stand against racial injustices by taking a knee before games, the outspoken duo have clashed plenty of times on variousn topics and have continuously traded barbs in press conference or on social media.

36-year-old Rapinoe, who many are tipping to play on until the 2023 Olympic Games in Paris, has even had run-ins with Trump's extended family too - this spat with Donald Trump Jr also centring around the team's decision to take a knee before games.
