Back in 2015, Benzema was arrested for allegedly playing a role in the extortion of former French international football Mathieu Valbuena over a sex tape.

Benzema is accused of orchestrating the entire plot to somehow get Valbuena to hand over a cash payment, although he has proclaimed his innocence since the day he was placed in handcuffs.

It is said that Benzema was pressuring Valbuena into paying blackmailers who threatened him with releasing an intimate video to the public.

During the trial, Valbuena testified that his eFrench teammate told him "there's a video, it's hot," during a national team training camp in 2015.

It is alleged that Benzema suggested he knew someone who could "solve your problem".

Now, several years later, has been found guilty of complicity and conspiracy to attempt blackmail in a Versailles court.

The Versaille prosecutor's office slapped him with a suspended sentence and he was ordered to pay a 75,000 euro fine.

According to multiple reports, the prosecutor requested a 10-month sentence but the judge overruled gave Benzema a year instead.

The Real and Les Bleus forward has denied any wrongdoing with his lawyer set to appeal the conviction.

"My reaction is one of anger faced with this judgement which is absolutely contradictory," Benzema's lawyer Sylvain Cormier said as he left the court.

"It was clearly announced by the court itself that Benzema was not aware of the plan in advance. Then they said he couldn't have not known without any proof of that? So they condemned him.

"They gave him a punishment that is very severe and just without proof. We're quite shocked. by this decision."

After his arrest in 2015, Benzema was booted from the French national team but has since been recalled.
