The AFLW's leading goal scorer for 2021 Darcy Vescio has come out as non-binary.

The Carlton star recently took to social media to reveal their gender and has received a bunch of support from the AFL community.

"Just popping in to let you know that I am non-binary," Vescio tweeted.

"Sharing this feels a bit daunting but brings me a lot of warmth and happiness. I am most comfortable with they/them pronouns and will always respond to Darcy unless in trouble.

"Thank you for reading."

Vescio's tweet alone has already racked up 7,500 likes and bunch of retweets, while her Instagram post has received over 8,000 likes already.

Their announcement comes not long after fellow AFLW player Tori Groves-Little revealed that they identified as non-binary.

"There's two parts of being non-binary," Groves-Little told AFL.com.au.

"There's one where you're more gender fluid where you could wake up and feel more feminine or one day you feel more masculine.

"And there's the second one, which I identify more as, is neither.

"It sucks medically when you've got to put male or female, it just doesn't feel right.

"It's just gender neutral, I guess. I don't like to identify as either."

Vescio joins a number of high profile athletes who have come out as non-binary.

Skateboarder Alana Smith made history by becoming the first non-binary Olympian, while footballer Quinn was the first transgender and non-binary athlete to win an Olympic gold medal when Canada defeated Sweden in the final in Tokyo.
