Chaos erupted at the Olympic Games as Tokyo officials scrambled to find a wild bear that snuck into Fukushima's softball stadium just a matter of hours before the opening pitch in the game against Japan and Australia.

Organisers confirmed that the Asian black bear had been spotted entering the arena by a local security guard and that authorities were sent in to try and locate it.

But, after hours of searching for its whereabouts, apparently it's still on the loose.

"A guard found a bear inside Azuma Sports Park early in the morning yesterday," a statement from the Fukushima police read.

"We also received similar information this morning.

"We couldn't find or capture the bear, and while there won't be any spectators at the stadium, we are on alert and searching for the bear around the site."

The animals are very common in the area, but have been known to be rather dangerous with multiple people being mauled - and some even killed - by the creature in the past.

Knowing of its aggressive nature, Olympic officials sprung into action to ensure the surrounding area remained safe.

Reports suggest that every single Olympic guard assigned to the venue was called to action to clear the area and make sure that the bear wasn't still lurking - I mean, the last thing you want is it entering the field of play while a game is underway, right?

It's understood the search mission went on for the entire night, but no bear was ever found.

Granted, no spectators will be present throughout the softball event, but Tokyo chiefs clearly aren't taking any chances.
