Doug Pederson Fired As Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach Just Three Years After Super Bowl Victory

It's the end of an era for Doug Pederson and the Eagles.

The man who delivered Philadelphia their first ever Super Bowl has now parted ways with the team follow a terrible run of form which saw them end the regular NFL season with a disappointing 4-11-1 record.

"I have spent the last few weeks evaluating everything from this past year and looking ahead," Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said.

"We are all very disappointed with the way our season went and eager to turn things around, not just for next season but also for the future of the franchise."

Despite taking the team to the playoffs in 2017, 2018 and 2019 the 52-year-old clearly hadn't done enough in the eyes of his employers.

And it seems he's already on the radar of another NFL team with the New York Jets tipped to sign him following Adam Gase's departure.

Pederson's abrupt firing in Philly comes just three years after he upset the odds to defeat Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in 2018 Super Bowl.

And while beating the Patriots, delivering the team its first Championship and galvanising an entire football-mad city was an amazing achievement in itself, who could forget Pederson's role in arguably the greatest play in Super Bowl history?

The 'Philly Special' was a genius trick play masterminded by backup quarterback Nick Foles which resulted in him scoring a touchdown.

With halftime approaching, rather than slot a simple field goal to extend his team's lead Pederson had other ideas.

As the team's lined up for fourth down, Foles suggested to his head coach that they attempt the trick play.

Most coaches and play-callers wouldn't even consider listening to their backup quarterback in a tense situation like that, but Pederson took a gamble and trusted in Foles when it mattered most.

And, well, it certainly paid off with Foles ultimately scoring one of the most iconic touchdowns in Super Bowl history.

To even attempt the 'Philly Special' (let alone pull it off) on the biggest stage made it even more, you guessed it, special.

That season, that touchdown and that Super Bowl triumph means Pederson will undoubtedly go down in Philadelphia folklore - even a poor season and accusations of tanking can't deny him that.
