One not-so-lucky fan thought he'd hit the jackpot when Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans handed him Tom Brady's 600th touchdown pass ball during the game against the Chicago Bears.

Realising that the pig skin was a piece of history, Buccs staff quickly retrieved it and the supporter kindly handed it over without much fuss.

It was a good will gesture from the fan, but it could be one that ultimately costs him a small fortune.

After seeing what happened at the Raymond James Stadium, a memorabilia expert has now come out and done an evaluation on the ball, revealing that it could be worth upwards of $500,000.

"Given how historic this ball is as the first 600th touchdown in NFL history," expert Ken Goldin said.

"I'd estimate this ball to be worth a minimum of $500,000."

That's right, you could say that the fan's decision to return the ball ultimately cost him around half-a-million dollars.

But then again, some acts of kindness are worth far more than any amount of money.

The Tampa Bay fan has received widespread praise for giving the ball back and even Brady himself was thankful.

"He's going to get something nice in return," Brady said in a press conference after the game.

"We'll get him a helmet or a couple of jerseys or some other stuff. It was really cool of him to do that."

A reporter actually found the fan during the game and asked him about the exchange with the Buccaneers staff member.

The bloke said: "Giving it up was tough. The trainer came over and asked for it.

"What am I going to do? Say no to Tom Brady?

"Tom Brady wanted it so I gave it back."

Asked if he thought twice about giving it back, the fan said: "Oh yeah. I told the trainer 'no' twice, but finally I said 'yes'."

What a legend.
