A wrestler has been the target of vile homophobic abuse during a recent bout.

AEW star Anthony Bowens, who came out as bisexual a few years back but is now openly gay, was on the receiving end of a truly awful slur from a member of the crowd.

During the four-on-four tag team match, Bowens was thrown against the ropes by Jungle Boy.

But as the two engaged in battle, a spectator could be heard yelling "f**king f*g" in Bowens' direction.

It remains unknown exactly whose mouth the slur came from, although it's understood AEW officials have now launched an investigation into the matter.

When footage of the incident emerged on social media, fans were quick to condemn the person's actions while throwing their support behind Bowens.

Being the consummate professional that he is, Bowens addressed the homophobic comment in a post on social media.

"This is why I posted that photo the other day," Bowens said, referring to a picture on his Instagram of him and his boyfriend kissing in front of anti-gay protestors.

"Stuff like this unfortunately still exists. Not phased, I'll just keep fighting against stuff like this till the day I die."

In the original photograph that Bowens is referring to, he captioned it "Stand up against hate" accompanied by a rainbow emoji.

Overall, it was a disappointing evening in the ring for Bowens.

Not only was he subject to some horrendous abuse, but he and his tag team partners also ended up losing the match.
