Floyd Mayweather to make shock return to boxing in rematch of hugely controversial fight

Floyd Mayweather is set to return to action in an exhibition bout.

Floyd Mayweather is set to make a shock return to boxing in a rematch of a hugely controversial bout during his professional career.

Mayweather called time on his storied pro career when he registered his 50th victory against Conor McGregor in a money-spinning Las Vegas showdown back in August 2017.

However, the former pound-for-pound king has returned to the ring in the form of several exhibition bouts.

In 2018, he stopped Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa before facing Logan Paul and Don Moore in non-scored contests.

The boxing legend then beat another Japanese opponent in Mikuru Asakura before defeating Deji Olatunji in Dubai.

He also took on former MMA fighter Aaron Chalmers and hasn't fought since his chaotic clash against John Gotti III, which ended in a mass brawl.

But the 47-year-old is set to lace up the gloves again for another exhibition bout in what will be a rematch of one of his pro fights.

According to Salvador Rodriguez of ESPN Mexico, Mayweather is in line to meet former foe Victor Ortiz on August 24 in Mexico.

Per the report, Mayweather vs. Ortiz 2 will take place at The Plaza de toros Mexico, which is the world's largest bullring, boasting a capacity of 41,262.

'Money' met Ortiz in the 42nd bout of his pro career and the fight ended in controversial fashion.

He stopped 'Vicious' in the fourth round to defend his WBC welterweight world title.

Ortiz inexplicably head-butted Mayweather, who complained about the move to referee Joe Cortez.

The official separated the fighters and signalled for time out before deducting a point off Ortiz.

Upon resuming the fight, Ortiz hugged Mayweather, who wasted no time in launching an attack.

He landed a brutal combination that landed flush on his opponent's chin, flooring him in the process.

Ortiz failed to beat the count as he was beaten by Mayweather.
