Gennady Golovkin scored a big win over Ryota Murata to become the unified world middleweight champion.

'GGG' stopped Murata in the ninth round in Japan to claim the WBA (super) world middleweight title.

The 40-year-old unloaded a barrage of punches on the Japanese boxer to record his 42nd victory in his legendary professional career.

Murata went down after being hit by Golovkin, with his corner throwing in the towel to halt the championship contest.

Golovkin is now in position to face Canelo Alvarez for a third time should the Mexican sensation beat Dmitry Bivol on May 7.

A potential trilogy bout between Canelo and Golovkin is tentatively scheduled for September 17.

Promoter Eddie Hearn teased the blockbuster fight on social media.

He tweeted: "What a fight!!! After 400 days out of the ring and a slow start @GGGBoxing brutalises Murata in Japan to unify the division..all eyes on #CaneloBivol."
