"The best team in England" - Sergio Gomez delighted to join Manchester City and work under 'outstanding' Pep Guardiola

"The best team in England" - Sergio Gomez delighted to join Manchester City and work under 'outstanding' Pep Guardiola

Manchester City's latest signing Sergio Gomez has provided his initial take on an exciting switch to the Etihad Stadium for the Spaniard.

Sergio Gomez has expressed his delight at joining forces with Pep Guardiola following the completion of his move to Manchester City from RSC Anderlecht.

The 21-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the Premier League champions that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium till at least 2026.

City have been keen to recruit at left-back this summer and Gomez represents an exciting addition to a squad that has seen wholesale changes made recently in terms of incomings and outgoings.

The Spanish full-back registered 49 appearances across all competitions for Anderlecht over the course of the previous campaign, scoring seven times and providing 15 assists.

Gomez can also operate as an attacking midfielder, which could make him a key asset for Pep Guardiola in the coming seasons.

A boyhood Manchester City fan, Gomez said upon finalising his move to the Etihad Stadium: “To be able to be part of this club is a dream come true for me and something any young player would aspire to.

“The number of trophies City have won over the past few years has been incredible and the style of football the team plays under Pep (Guardiola) is the most exciting in Europe."

Working with Pep Guardiola is an attraction as big as any for players who have joined City since 2016, with Gomez no different to others who've aspired to surrender themselves to the Catalan.

The young left-back added: “Playing for and being guided by Pep (Guardiola) and his coaches is going to be very special.

“I’ve heard so much about the City fans and how passionate they are, so I can’t wait to get started and to try and help the club achieve even more.”

Manchester City have made significant changes to their first-team squad after retaining the Premier League title on the final day of last season in enthralling fashion against Aston Villa.

Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez have been brought in to bolster the attacking ranks as Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling departed for Arsenal and Chelsea respectively.

The Blues won their fourth league title under Guardiola last term and reached the Champions League semi-final, where they faltered right at the very end against eventual winners Real Madrid.

As former club captain Fernandinho left after an incredible nine-year spell in Manchester, Kalvin Phillips was signed from Leeds United to strengthen competition for Rodri in central midfield.

Stefan Ortega was signed after Zack Steffen decided to leave on a season-long loan to Middlesbrough ahead of the World Cup in November.

It remains to be seen if Sergio Gomez could feature when Manchester City take on Newcastle in their third league fixture of the season on Sunday.
