Sydney Thunder record lowest ever T20 score in Big Bash defeat

Sydney Thunder record lowest ever T20 score in Big Bash defeat

Openers Alex Hales and Matthew Gilkes were both out for ducks and everyone else failed as they lost to Adelaide Strikers.

Big Bash League side Sydney Thunder recorded the lowest ever total in a T20 game, being bowled out for just 15 runs, on Friday.

The Strikers were left to chase 140 runs by Adelaide Strikers, after the away side batted first, but were bowled out inside just six overs for a ridiculously low total.

It was just the second game for both teams in this year's BBL, with the Strikers having won their opening match and Thunder having lost theirs.

Strikers won the toss and decided to bat first, but found themselves in a spot of bother at 32/3 in the sixth over, and needing a pairing to stay at the crease together a little longer.

Chris Lynn and Colin de Grandhomme took the score close to triple figures, before both men fell in the 13th over, with the tail then taking them to a competitive 139/9.

However, it ended up being far more than competitive, with Thunder struggling from the get go, as opener Matthew Gilkes was out for a duck after just three balls.

By the end of the second over, the hosts looked in real trouble, with the score 7/3, after Henry Thornton had picked up two wickets in his opening six balls.

When Alex Halex, fresh from winning the T20 World Cup in Australia just last month, was removed in the first ball of the following over for nothing, Sydney were facing a huge uphill battle.

Thunder would have had one eye on the lowest ever score in the Big Bash, which was 57, made by Melbourne Renegades back in 2015.

The team coached by former England head coach Trevor Bayliss continued to struggle though, with a second wicket going down in the third over.

In the fourth they only lost one but Wes Agar then took out Chris Green and Gurinder Sandhu for ducks in the fifth, leaving just two wickets left.

Thornton returned in the sixth over to finish off the match with both of them, to finish with figures of two overs, one maiden, three runs for five wickets.

Number 10 batter Brendan Doggett top scored for the team with four runs, with Rilee Rossouw and Extras next on the list with three each.

The previous lowest ever score in T20 had been made by Turkey, in a match against Czech Republic, back in 2019, when they could only manage 21 runs.

“I’ve never seen a game of cricket like this ever,” Fox Cricket commentator Brett Lee said.

“Daffy Duck’s going to get a cramp here! He’s been working hard all night – another duck.”

Fellow commentator Dan Ginnane added, "This is like an under 10s score," and at one point that's what it looked like the total would be.
