Aussie cricket star Glenn Maxwell suffers a broken leg after freak accident at birthday party

Aussie cricket star Glenn Maxwell suffers a broken leg after freak accident at birthday party

Maxwell had just been selected as part of Australia’s squad for the three-match ODI series against England.

Australian cricket star Glenn Maxwell suffered a broken leg in what has been described as a ‘freak accident’ at a birthday party.

Cricket Australia confirmed the news over the weekend, revealing that the all-rounder underwent surgery on Sunday (November 13) afternoon.

The incident happened while running in a Melbourne backyard during a friend’s 50th birthday party.

He suffered a fractured left fibula when his leg became stuck.

Newscorp reports that the 34-year-old is expected to be out of action for eight to 12 weeks.

He was reportedly not intoxicated when he slipped over.

Maxwell had just been selected as part of Australia’s squad for the three-match ODI series against England.

The series was set to get underway this Thursday (November 17).

He will be replaced by bowler Sean Abbott in the national squad.

Cricket Australia chief selector George Bailey said: “Glenn is in good spirits.

“It was an unfortunate accident and we feel for Glenn in the circumstances given he was in great touch in his last few games.

“Glenn is a critical part of our white ball structure and we will continue to support him through his recovery and rehabilitation.”

With the T20 Big Bash League just around the corner, it also signals a huge blow for the Melbourne Stars with Maxwell potentially missing the entire season.

Stars general manager Blair Crouch said: “Glenn is obviously a huge part of the Melbourne Stars and we wish him well in his recovery.

“He will continue to be a key part of the club during the start of the season as he works his way back to full fitness and we look forward to seeing him soon.”

Maxwell hadn’t played first-class cricket since October 2019 and was hoping to end his hiatus by returning to the Sheffield Shield this summer.

He was hoping to improve his chances of making the Australian Test side ahead of their tour of India.

Cricket players have had a horrible time when it comes to odd injuries in recent times.

Earlier this year, England’s Jonny Bairstow suffered a broken ankle when he slipped playing golf.

Meanwhile. Aussie wicketkeeper Josh Inglis missed the T20 World Cup after badly cutting his hand while playing golf on the eve of the tournament.
