Mick Schumacher is set to follow in the footsteps of his seven time world champion dad Michael, with the announcement the German will be racing in Formula One next season.

The younger Schumacher, who currently drives in Formula Two, was announced on Wednesday morning as the new driver for Haas next season.

Mick, who is part of the Ferrari Driver Academy, had his first F1 experience in Scuderia Ferrari's SF90 during in season testing at the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2019.

He was meant to make his first appearance at a Grand Prix weekend earlier this year at the Eifel Grand Prix for Alfa Romeo but the session was cancelled due to bad weather.

It had long been expected that the 21-year-old would join the team, following the announcement earlier in the season Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen would be leaving the team at the end of the current season.

The Haas social media team were in further inundated with calls to 'announce Mick' after Tuesday's announcement that Nikita Mazepin was joining the team as one of the drivers for next season..

The line up for next season means Haas will have two rookies in their car for 2021 but the two men are first and third in the Formula Two drivers standings with one race left.

Schumacher looks set to win the championships and would need to score zero point whilst second placed Callum Ilott wins the race in order to not win.

Mazepin's battle to remain on the podium in the championship is somewhat closer, he can't Ilot but he can be caught with fellow Russian Robert Shwartzman just a point back.

Haas were in the news at the weekend with Grosjean, who has just two races left on his time at Haas, involved in a shocking crash.

The Frenchman was lucky to get out of his car alive during the Bahrain Grand Prix, when his car set ablaze on impact with a barrier.

With the 34-year-old being replaced by Pietro Fittipaldi for this weekend's Sakhir GP, also on the Bahrain track but a different course, and George Russell temporarily replacing Lewis Hamilton, after the world champion tested positive for Covid, it has been a big couple of days for driver announcements.
