A New Cathedral-Style Design Has Been Decided For New €1 Billion San Siro

A New Cathedral-Style Design Has Been Decided For New €1 Billion San Siro

AC Milan and Inter Milan will play at the new San Siro, with the final design now decided.

The final design for the renovated San Siro has been decided, with AC and Inter Milan both playing at the new and improved stadium once it is built.

As per Il Corriere della Sera, Populous are one step away from scoring the winning design - which draws inspiration from the famous Duomo Cathedral and will use part of the old ground.

One of the other leading contenders was the 'Rings of Manica' project from Cmr and Sportium, but a meeting with Populous designers is already pencilled in for after the upcoming Milan election and they are said to be "one step away".

Although the speed of the process depends on the council's approval, there is hope that work could be completed by 2026.

Built in 1925, the famous Stadio Giuseppe Meazza has hosted some of the all-time great games. From four European Cup finals to six games at the 1990 World Cup, this venue is steeped in history.

However, despite the aura it commands, Inter and AC, who have played at the ground since 1947, are moving with the times and pushing ahead with a modern arena.

The new stadium will be built on the very same site as the San Siro and as well as being environmentally friendly, is poised to have a hub dedicated to retail, sports, cultural and leisure activities both outdoors and indoors, including a running track, a cycle path, an outdoor gym, a skateboard park, a five-a-side pitch and sports museum.

A statement from both clubs said: "FC Internazionale Milano and AC Milan believe it is essential, especially in light of the current moment, to commence a project that represents more than one billion euros of private investment, which will generate thousands of new jobs and serve as a cornerstone for the future development of the city of Milan and Italian football."
