Alisson Becker commits absolute howler as Wolves go ahead vs Liverpool

Alisson Becker commits absolute howler as Wolves go ahead vs Liverpool

It's not been a great few days for Liverpool and goalkeeper Alisson joined in with their issues, gifting a goal to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Alisson Becker watched David de Gea and thought 'anything you can do I can do better,' as his moment of madness handed Wolves a goal in their FA Cup third round tie with Liverpool.

De Gea had been extremely lucky on Friday night to be lifted out of a hole of his own making by his teammates, after a Massimo Taibi level error gave Everton a goal.

Fortunately for him, and United, Marcus Rashford's excellent performance was enough to see that Conor Coady goal not knock them out of the FA Cup.

Just 24 hours later, and Liverpool keeper Alisson proved that he has the ability to make a mistake just as bad as his fellow member from the Goalkeeper's Union.

Jurgen Klopp's side were also at home facing Premier League opposition, in the shape of Wolves, with Cody Gakpo making his debut for the Reds.

Things started pretty well for the hosts, with Gakpo getting an early shot on target and certainly looking the likelier team to make a breakthrough.

However, as the half went on, Julen Lopetegui's side started to get into the game, with Joel Matip lucky his attempted clearance hit Goncalo Guedes but didn't go anywhere.

But they weren't that lucky shortly later, when Becker cleared a ball short to Thiago Alcantara, the midfielder didn't reach the ball and the ball came back to the keeper.

The Brazilian attempted to get the ball rolling again quickly but just kicked it out straight to Guedes, who had seen what was about to happen, and put the ball into the open goal.

"The spirit of Karius lives on," one fan said, remembering the former Liverpool goalkeeper's mistake in the 2018 Champions League final.

"Thinking that Alisson did that on purpose in protest of being made to play a domestic cup game," another fan joked, with the former Roma man usually replaced by Caoimhin Kelleher for cup games.

Former Liverpool player Jose Enrique summed up the feelings of the club's fans at the moment, adding, "Even Alisson now... I don't know what's going on with us."

Another wanted to also point the finger at Thiago, saying, "That's obviously on Alisson, but give me one good reason why Thiago is doing stepovers there? It's so dense and needless."

And another thinks the Brazilian's previous heroics let him off, replying, "As bad as it was, Alisson has been unreal this season for us, so ima just let it slide. These things happen from time to time."

The decision to not play Kelleher in the cup was a surprise one, considering the Irishman had played all the way up to the FA Cup final last season.

Fortunately for Alisson, his team were level by the break, with chaotic striker Darwin Nunez scoring right before the half time whistle.

Trent Alexander-Arnold played a brilliant cross, which beat two Wolves' defenders, with Nunez wrong footing goalkeeper Matija Sarkic.
