'No substance' Antony branded a 'YouTube footballer' after his performance against Arsenal

'No substance' Antony branded a 'YouTube footballer' after his performance against Arsenal

Antony has been slammed following his showing against Arsenal.

Antony has been ruthlessly branded a 'YouTube footballer' following his performance for Manchester United against Arsenal.

The 22-year-old, who has scored three goals in the Premier League since his £86 million move from Ajax, started in his side's 3-2 defeat at Emirates last weekend.

But he failed to influence the game as the Red Devils slumped to their fifth league defeat of the season.

The Brazil international was compared to Arsenal flop Nicolas Pepe following Man United's draw at Crystal Palace, with Darren Bent slamming the player's lack of 'substance' on the pitch.

The former Tottenham and Aston Villa forward also called him a 'YouTube footballer' in a brutal assessment when analysing his showings.

"All tricks and flicks, no substance at the minute," he said on talkSPORT.

"He’s doing all this stuff but he’s not going past anyone. It’s not like he’s doing a trick to manipulate the ball to go past someone, he’s just doing it for the sake of it.

"A little bit like the spin, at the time I was like 'ah come on it’s only a spin'."

Host Andy Goldstein asked Bent if he was describing the Man United winger as a 'YouTube footballer' to which he replied: "A little bit yeah.

"You clip all the best bits of a footballer and you look at it on YouTube and go 'wow, I can’t believe we’re signing him!'

"But where’s the substance in between, where’s the end product? I know he started off alright at United, couple of good goals, but where’s the end product?"

Rio Ferdinand has also expressed concerns over Antony, claiming he doesn't 'beat anyone'.

The former Man United defender said: "He just doesn’t beat anyone and I’m sitting there thinking, 'Was that always the way?'

"I’ve seen clips of him when he was at Ajax and he was somebody who used to beat people.

"I saw Thomas Partey, who I wouldn’t put down as a sprinter, absolutely burst past him, and I’m thinking, 'Woah, he (Antony) hasn’t got much power in them legs!'

"He’s a tricky winger, but with tricky wingers you want them to still be able to beat the defender."

Despite his form, Antony has five goals in all competitions to his name, having scored on his debut against Arsenal and most recently scoring a stunner versus Charlton in the EFL Cup.
