Ex-Liverpool star blasts Man United's deal for Antony 'ridiculous', claims £60m for Anthony Gordon 'makes more sense'

Ex-Liverpool star blasts Man United's deal for Antony 'ridiculous', claims £60m for Anthony Gordon 'makes more sense'

United will reportedly pay up to £85m for the Ajax winger.

Former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann claims Manchester United have spent a "ridiculous amount of money" on Antony and believes the Ajax winger could fail to live up to expectations at Old Trafford.

United confirmed on Tuesday that they had reached an agreement in principle to sign Antony, subject to him passing a medical, agreeing personal terms and receiving international clearance.

The Red Devils have agreed a deal that will see them pay an initial fee of £80.75m for the Brazil international, with a further £4.25m in add-ons, according to the BBC.

It makes Antony the joint-second most expensive signing in the club's history, alongside Harry Maguire, and behind only Paul Pogba's £89m move from Juventus in 2016.

Former Liverpool and Bayern Munich midfielder Hamann believes United have massively overpaid for Antony, who has scored 24 goals in 82 appearances for Ajax.

Hamann also believes paying £60m for Everton winger and Chelsea target Anthony Gordon would be a better piece of business this summer.

"I do believe it's a ridiculous amount of money to pay for him," Hamann told The Games Cabin.

"I can see the £60m for Anthony Gordon making more sense than £84m for Antony.

"If you look at the players that have left Ajax in recent years, you have Matthijs de Ligt who failed at Juventus, Barcelona want to get rid of Frenkie de Jong and Donny van de Beek went to Manchester United and was offloaded to Everton and didn’t even play at Everton.

"Hakim Ziyech also has failed at Chelsea. All these players coming from Ajax have failed. I know Erik ten Hag has previously coached Antony, but that's something that sticks in the back of my mind."

United have now spent more than £210m this summer, with Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro also joining Erik ten Hag's new-look squad.

The deal to sign Antony has also raised eyebrows among United supporters, with some fans believing the club has paid too much for the 22-year-old.

"Top 10 worst transfers in history. Number 1: Antony to Man U for €100m," wrote one fan on Twitter, referring to the fee of around €100m that Ajax are set to bank from the sale.

"Footy is mudded if this bloke is 100mil," added another.

Meanwhile, another wrote: "Fair play Ajax that's daylight robbery."
