Arsenal set for huge transfer windfall if Declan Rice is sold due to 'smart' contract clause

Arsenal could receive a major payout if Declan Rice leaves West Ham this summer and it's all because of Matteo Guendouzi.

Rice has emerged as Arsenal's priority transfer target this summer, as Mikel Arteta seeks to add two midfielders to his ranks.

West Ham are thought to be holding out for an offer worth up to £120 million if they are to allow the 24-year-old to leave east London.

While the Gunners may consider the figure rather steep, the club could be due some extra cash courtesy of former midfielder Guendouzi.

The Frenchman is reportedly on the verge of calling time on his Marseille career, and has been rumoured with a return to the Premier League.

Guendouzi moved to the Ligue 1 side in 2021 after falling out of favour under Arteta, as questions were raised over the 24-year-old's attitude.

But in the mix of his bitter exit, Arsenal made sure to cover their backs regarding any future sale.

Arsenal attached a sell-on clause to Guendouzi's contract in 2022, following his successful loan spell with Marseille.

In turn, the club will receive up to 15 per cent of any fee Marseille receive for the midfielder's sale, according to The Mirror.

The Express called it a 'smart' decision and it looks as though Arsenal will reap the rewards this summer, with an array of clubs sniffing around the midfielder.

West Ham are among those targeting the 24-year-old as a potential replacement for Rice, claim The Athletic.

David Moyes is allegedly resigned to losing his prized asset and will not risk letting him leave for free next summer, with just a year left on his current deal.

Marseille are thought to value Guendouzi at around £35 million, with Arsenal set to pocket a proportion of that fee.

Indeed, the extra cash could come in very handy as Arteta aims to heavily invest in his squad this summer.
