The race is on.

Arsenal are set to rival Manchester United to sign Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries, according to reports.

United have allegedly set their sights on signing Dumfries this summer, with Erik ten Hag a 'huge fan' of the defender.

The Red Devils boss has been in the market for a right-back ever since his arrival at Old Trafford, and was heavily linked to Dumfries in January.

But in a major blow for Ten Hag, Arsenal have now entered the race for his signature, claim Football Insider.

Ben White has done an excellent job as a stand-in right-back this season, playing a key role in Arsenal's ascent to the top of the Premier League table.

However, Mikel Arteta is keen to add another right-back to his ranks in preparation for a busy schedule next season, with the prospect of Champions League football seeming all but guaranteed.

It is reported that a fee between £40-£50 million could land Dumfries due to the ongoing financial issues at Inter Milan.

The 26-year-old has registered two goals and six assists in 31 appearances for the Nerazzuri this season.

Whilst he enjoyed a successful World Cup campaign for the Netherlands, starting all five matches under Louis van Gaal.

Takehiro Tomiyasu became first choice down Arsenal's right-hand flank last season. However, he has fallen out of favour this term, registering just a handful of league starts.

Meanwhile, back-up full-back Cedric Soares was sent out on loan to Fulham in January, and is likely to move on permanently in the summer.

Chelsea have also been linked to Dumfries. Although their recent acquisition of Malo gusto from Lyon, and Reece James' recent contract renewal, would make Stamford bridge an unlikely destination.
