Arsenal have secret weapon to sign Brighton star Kaoru Mitoma, Mikel Arteta must take full advantage

Arsenal may have a secret weapon in the race to sign Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma.

Mitoma has enjoyed a breakthrough season on the south coast, scoring 10 goals and providing seven assists across all competitions.

The Japan international arrived at the Amex in 2021 for a fee of £2.1 million soon after graduating from university.

Although that price looks to be a bargain now, with a number of top clubs eyeing up a move for the 25-year-old.

Among those interested are Arsenal, who are reportedly keen to add a winger to their ranks this summer.

And the Gunners may have a significant advantage over the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City due to the presence of international teammate Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Arsenal's secret weapon

Discussing how he has adapted to life in England, Mitoma opened up on his friendship with Arsenal right-back Tomiyasu, revealing that his being in London is 'a nice reassurance'.

“I haven’t found it tough living here yet," Mitoma told Optus Sport.

"Having him in London is a nice reassurance even if I can’t see him much because of busy schedules. But we get along well as teammates for Japan and we both strive to play at higher levels."

Arsenal supporters will hope that the pair can be reunited at the Emirates. However, Mikel Arteta is likely to have his work cut out with Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi adamant the winger is not for sale.

Indeed, the Seagulls have reportedly opened talks with Mitoma over a new contract and plan to double his wages to £40,000 per-week, according to Football Insider.

While Mitoma revealed he feels liked he 'belongs' at Brighton, who are in contention to finish in the European places this season.

"I feel that this team suits how I play very well," added Mitoma.

"I feel like I belong in this squad and my teammate and manager have supported me every step of the way."
