Ben Foster could come out of retirement and make surprise return to Premier League

Ben Foster could come out of retirement and make surprise return to Premier League

The 39-year-old goalkeeper announced his retirement from football last year.

He may have announced his retirement from football last year but Ben Foster could be about to receive an offer from a top Premier League club, according to reports.

The 39-year-old goalkeeper, who made 536 senior appearances at club level, decided to hang up his gloves in September after spells at Manchester United, Birmingham, West Brom and Watford.

Speaking to his YouTube channel Ben Foster - The Cycling GK to confirm the news, the former England international also revealed that he turned down a move to Newcastle before retiring.

"Newcastle was really interesting to me, I asked for a really good wage and hoped they would say no," Foster explained.

"It was nice to feel wanted but I didn't want the upheaval of living away from my family. I was so happy to walk away. I didn't want to do it.

"I had this deep feeling, I didn't want to move away from home. I didn't want to be in an apartment away from my family at the age of 39. You have to go with your gut feeling.

"Especially at the age I am and everything I've got going on. The lads would have been brilliant and I would have buzzed off the stadium, the fans, all that kind of stuff. The overriding sinking feeling was I don't want to do this."

Foster has since been posting regularly to his YouTube channels, including the popular Fozcast podcast.

But he may have to seriously consider an offer from Premier League side Spurs, who are looking for find emergency cover for Hugo Lloris after the French goalkeeper was ruled out for eight weeks with injury.

Lloris suffered knee ligament damage in their 1-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday.

And now, the North London club are 'ready to turn' to free agent Foster, according to The Mirror, who say Spurs would need special dispensation from the Premier League to add the experienced goalkeeper to their 25-man squad.

If Foster were to sign for Spurs, then an awkward encounter with manager Antonio Conte could follow.

Back in November last year, after a section of Spurs fans booed their players at half-time during their defeat to Liverpool, Conte explained that unless fans show some patience, then players and the coaching staff could ‘lose the enthusiasm'.

Foster hit back at those comments from the Italian, saying: “He [Conte] has done this already. And I don’t like this.

"After the game, Conte came out and he said basically if the fans are going to keep booing like they are doing, then we will have a look at it at the end of the season.

“I think personally you are lucky to be the manager at Spurs. I think Spurs are doing you a bit of a favour, so I don’t think how you can commentate that about Spurs.”

Thoughts on Tottenham potentially making a move for Foster?
