Bruno Fernandes hits back at Richard Keys' 'playing with 10 men' comments

Bruno Fernandes hits back at Richard Keys' 'playing with 10 men' comments

Richard Keys was critical of one Manchester United player over the weekend

Bruno Fernandes has hit back at Richard Keys’ recent comments about Manchester United ‘playing with ten men’.

On Sunday, Erik ten Hag’s men took on Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City side at Old Trafford.

Goals from Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho secured a comfortable 3-0 win for United.

Despite a good win, Keys was very critical of United’s January loan signing Wout Weghorst.

He said: “You’re playing with ten men most weeks if he’s [Weghorst] in.

“I mean, he doesn’t do enough to justify a starting place does he? Come on, let’s be honest!”

On the back of the criticism that has been directed Weghorst’s way, Fernandes has defended the Dutch striker.

He said to MUTV: “Sometimes it’s like this, you want the ball to go in and it’s a matter of time.

“As a striker, you always want to score goals but he’s doing his job, doing a lot of runs that we need, the pressure that we need.

“This is why he’s still playing. It’s a matter of time until he gets his goals. After he gets the first he will open something that will give him more and more goals so he can help the team even more.”

United are currently basking in great form as they continue to fight in all four major competitions.

Ten Hag has the chance to get his hands on his first trophy as United boss when he takes his side to Wembley for the Carabao Cup final, with Newcastle United standing in their way.

Before that, United have the small matter of the second leg Europa League playoff tie against Barcelona after last week’s thrilling 2-2 draw.

Ahead of the match, the Red Devils boss sent a clear message to the United fans: “I said come Thursday. It's a big game, make sure you are there and we beat Barcelona together.

“I thank the fans for their trust in me. I feel committed with this club, I love to be here but it's not in my influence.”

Will United win all four trophies? Only time will tell.
