Bundesliga Match Abandoned After Assistant Referee Is Hit By An Object

Borussia Monchengladbach's game with Bochum was halted part way through after a beer was thrown from the crowd and hit the official.

Friday night's Bundesliga game between Bochum and Borussia Monchengladbach was abandoned after the assistant referee was hit by a pint of beer that was thrown by a member of the crowd.

After a goalless first half in the game, Alassane Plea put Monchengladbach ahead 10 minutes after the break, as they looked to pull away from the relegation zone.

The visiting side doubled their lead, through Breel Embolo just after the hour mark and looked to be heading for a much needed three points.

However, the game had to be abandoned with just 19 minutes left of the game when a member of the crowd through a beer cup from the stands.

It hit assistant referee Christian Gittelman on the head, causing the official to drop his flag, he then went to his knees before giving a thumbs up to suggest he was okay.

Referee Benjamin Cortus then stopped the game and took his team off the pitch, with the home team remonstrating with their fans after the beer came from the hosts supporters.

"We can only formally apologise to linesman Christian Gittelman," Bochum said on their official Twitter page after the match was abandoned.

"A highly embarrassing and bitter evening for us. An extremely stupid action from an idiotic fan."

In an unfortunate moment of irony, the club had posted a video on social media just hours before kick off calling on fans to drink their beer, not thrown it.

The ugly scenes continue a trend that has certainly been prevalent in English football in recent months, with fans throwing things onto the pitch.

Anthony Elanga was one of the most recent examples of being hit, when he was hit by a coin after scoring a goal for Manchester United.

The United fans threw objects at Diego Simeone on Tuesday night, following their elimination from the Champions League, as the Atletico Madrid manager left pitchside for the dressing rooms.
