Son Heung-min Has Donated £100k To Victims Of South Korea Forest Fire

Spurs' forward Son Heung-min has donated £100,000 after South Korea was hit with its worst forest fire as 525 hectares of forest damaged near a resort in Goseong, in a city close to the border with North Korea.

At the beginning of April South Korea was hit with the biggest forest fire in the country's history as over two square miles of the country were hit with the fire.

17,700 emergency service men and women had to be deployed to deal with the fire that destroyed over 100 homes, killed two people and left 1000s having to flee their homes.

The fire is thought by investigators to have been started from a transformer spark on April 5th spreading across the mountainous region of Goseong, near the border with North Korea.

Spurs forward Son Heung-min, a sporting hero in his home country who was a member of the Asian Games winning team last year, has donated £100k to help the relief effort.

Speaking, via Goal, about his donation Son said:

"It's nothing compared to what the victims have sacrificed. Although I'm living abroad, I know what's happening in my home country.

"I think it's something I should do when there's a big disaster in my home country. I believe money does not matter. The most important thing is a mind to do something for the victims."

Son's part in the Asian Games win last year, in which he only scored one goal, means that he doesn't have to do conscripted army service in South Korea.

Males between the age of 18 and 28 have to do service in the country but winning a gold medal at the Olympics or Asian Games or winning the World Cup gives athletes an exemption.

The 26 year old has become extremely important to Spurs this season with 12 goals and six assists in the Premier League and has filled the gap left by Harry Kane's injuries.

The England captain is once again injured, and probably missing for the rest of the season, following a challenge by Fabian Delph in the Champions League quarter final last week.

Son scored in that game to give Spurs a 1-0 lead when they travel to face Manchester City on Wednesday and he could be the difference in the tie.
