Roy Keane proven right about Frank Lampard after latest Chelsea loss

Roy Keane proven right about Frank Lampard after latest Chelsea loss

Chelsea have lost three consecutive games under Frank Lampard.

Roy Keane's assessment of Frank Lampard appears to be coming true after Chelsea's latest defeat.

Chelsea legend Frank Lampard was brought in to replace Graham Potter as manager until the end of the season, but his appointment seems to have done little to lift the gloom at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have lost all three games since Lampard returned to the dugout, losing 1-0 to Wolves, 2-0 to Real Madrid and 2-1 to Brighton.

The 2021 Champions League winners are now winless in six matches and find themselves 11th in the Premier League table with just 39 points from 31 games.

Lampard clearly hasn't had the positive impact Chelsea owner Todd Boehly hoped he'd have, and Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane saw it coming.

Speaking on a recent episode of The Overlap podcast, the former Manchester United midfielder predicted Lampard would need luck to be on his side if he were to turn things around at Stamford Bridge.

"Frank is a lucky boy," he said. "Frank has had some really good jobs, you need some luck in the game, but to go back in there?

"Good luck to him. The way things have changed in football, the manager is under a lot of pressure now. "They've got some excellent players, but obviously something is missing at the moment. Even in the last couple of performances, they're not finding a way to win.

"I look at the personality of a team when all the stats are positive in terms of possession and chances created, but they haven't got that nastiness that some of the Chelsea teams have had over the last few years."

Saturday's 2-1 loss to Brighton was particularly disappointing, and after the match Lampard admitted as much.

"I've been at the club nine days, I don't like what I saw today," Lampard said.

"I'm not going to try and dress that up in any way. We have to be really honest about that. There should be a feeling when you play for Chelsea of pride involved."

Next up for Lampard and Chelsea is a Champions League quarterfinal second leg date with Real Madrid. With his side two goals down on aggregate, Lampard knows it will be tough.

"We have to do more for Tuesday. To get there, there needs to be a new energy. That needs to come back."

He added that his side need to do "the basics of football" well. "More than defeats, it's the performance we have to talk about," he said.
