Chelsea release statement condemning the 'hateful chanting' against Liverpool

Chelsea have condemned the 'hateful chanting' from home supporters aimed at Liverpool during their league fixture on Tuesday.

The sickening chants marred the Premier League clash between Chelsea and Liverpool as they played out a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge.

But attention turned away from the pitch after the result as both clubs and the league released statements condemning chants sang by Chelsea fans.

Vile chants referencing the Hillsborough disaster were heard during the league clash, with the Blues apologising to anyone who was offended by them.

The club's statement reads: "Chelsea FC condemns the inappropriate chants heard from some home fans during this evening’s game. Hateful chanting has no place in football and we apologise to anyone who has been offended by them."

Liverpool said: "We know the impact these vile chants have on those who continue to suffer as a result of football tragedies. For their sake, this has to stop."

The league added: "The Premier League condemns the tragedy chanting heard at tonight’s match between Chelsea and Liverpool. We continue to treat this as an unacceptable issue and are seeking to address it as a priority."

It comes just a few days after Manchester City condemned the behaviour of their fans as they also aimed disgusting abuse at Liverpool supporters during their match last weekend.

As for Liverpool and Chelsea's league position following last night's stalemate, Jurgen Klopp's side sit in eighth place with 43 points on the board, seven points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham.

Chelsea, on the other hand, remain in 11th place, level on points with Fulham.

It was their first game since the sacking of Graham Potter, with Bruno Saltor taking charge of first-team duties.

Speaking after the league fixture, he said: "It's been really difficult for them. It's not the first time they been in this situation this season.

"As a player you invest a lot in the manager. There's been good relationships with Graham and the players. The players have suffered as well.

"We just need to keep helping them. They've been going through a lot as well and it's been a tough season for them. What they could affect the most was the attitude and the effort and that was there."
