‘I was fooled’, former Chelsea man brutally rips into Antonio Conte

‘I was fooled’, former Chelsea man brutally rips into Antonio Conte

Conte won the Premier League during his time managing Chelsea.

Former Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi has slammed his former boss Antonio Conte, accusing the Italian of signing him under false promises.

The Belgian joined the Blues back in 2016 from Marseille in a deal worth £35 million. During his time with the Ligue 1 side, Batshuayi produced some impressive performances and as a result, was compared to Chelsea legend Didier Drogba.

Batshuayi’s move promised a lot but ultimately delivered very little as the striker failed to nail down a regular starting spot in the team.

In total, he made 77 appearances across all competitions and scored 25 goals over his six year stay at Stamford Bridge.

Batshuayi was loaned out multiple times during his Chelsea career, to the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Valencia, Crystal Palace and Besiktas.

Despite his Chelsea career being filled predominantly with lows, there were also some highs.

Batshuayi was the one who scored the goal that secured Chelsea their Premier League title during the 16/17 season, when Conte was at the helm. The Belgian also won the FA Cup in the following season.

This summer, his Chelsea journey came to an end as he moved to Turkish Super Lig side Fenerbahce.

The 28-year-old has now talked about his time at Stamford Bridge and has slammed Conte of not following up on his promises made to him.

Batshuayi said to Sport: “Conte was constantly contradicting himself.

“To start with my arrival. He called me and explained his project. He wanted me to play in a two-man frontline alongside Diego Costa.”

He continued: “Did I believe that? Of course, because Conte has played with two attackers all his career. Except at Chelsea with me.

“I do not understand. The truth is that I have been fooled far too often.”

Conte was famed for his 3-5-2 formation prior to his move to Chelsea. However, when he arrived at Stamford Bridge, he switched to a 3-4-3 formation, with Diego Costa the focal point of the attack.

Even when Costa was sold, Batshuayi failed to play regularly for Chelsea as the likes of Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud came in which put Batshuayi further down the pecking order.

So far this season, Batshuayi has made just three appearances for the Turkish side, scoring once.
