Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo still has unwanted World Cup record he wants to correct against Switzerland

Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo still has unwanted World Cup record he wants to correct against Switzerland

Cristiano Ronaldo has achieved so much in football, but now he has the opportunity to write one of the wrongs in his international career.

Cristiano Ronaldo will have the chance to break one of his most unwanted records when Portugal face off against Switzerland at the World Cup on Tuesday.

Portugal finished top of their group, despite their loss to South Korea in their final game after back-to-back victories over Ghana and Uruguay.

Now they face off against Switzerland, who overcame Serbia 3-2 in a final group game shootout in a brilliant match, in what stands out as one of the better knockout ties of the round of 16.

Ronaldo will want to be centre stage for that in what is likely to be his final World Cup.

The 37-year-old has started all three of Portugal's games so far and scored in the opening game against Ghana, but he was also named in the 'worst team' of the group stages for his performances.

There is also another unwanted record he wants to break - scoring in the knockout stages of the World Cup.

Despite being the first man to score at five World Cups, he has never managed to net in the knockout stages where it really matters.

What better time to break his duck than against a tricky Switzerland side who, let's not forget, knocked out France from the Euros last summer.

Brazil face the Swiss on Tuesday in what will be a highly competitive game, with the winner in line to face the winner of Spain vs Morocco.

Ronaldo's Portugal record stands at 118 goals in 194 games for his country, but if he finishes his World Cup career without a goal in the knockouts, it will surely haunt a player of his stature.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner is still without a club after he parted ways with Manchester United following his bombshell interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV.

There is an element that he is playing to put himself in the shop window, with the only real frontrunners for his signature seemingly to be Al-Nassr from Saudi Arabia, who have seemingly offered a whopping £173m per season.

The transfer will have to wait for another few weeks while we see if one of the sport's greatest can have one last dance on the world's biggest stage.
