Donny van de Beek buried after poor performance in Carabao Cup, his time at Man Utd is surely coming to an end

Donny van de Beek buried after poor performance in Carabao Cup, his time at Man Utd is surely coming to an end

The former Ajax midfielder has not worked out at Old Trafford and even Erik ten Hag hasn't been able to save him.

Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek failed in one of his few chances for Manchester United, with fans criticising his performance in the Carabao Cup.

Van de Beek joined United in 2020 but the past two years have not been a happy time for the midfielder at all, who has failed to break into the first team on a consistent basis.

He was forced to go out on loan to Everton in the first half of 2022, just to try and find some sort of form, but even that move didn't go according to plan.

Erik ten Hag's arrival at Old Trafford led to some optimism that he could find the kind of form he had a Ajax, that led to interest from Real Madrid.

However, even the arrival of his fellow Dutchman has not been able to save Van de Beek from being a flop in the Premier League.

Christian Eriksen, Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay and Fred have all been favoured ahead of the Dutch star, who won't be going to the World Cup due to his lack of form and matches.

On Thursday night, the 25-year-old was given the chance to shine for United, playing in the number 10 role in the Carabao Cup vs Aston Villa.

But, unfortunately for him, Van de Beek was poor for his 62 minutes on the pitch, and United vastly improved once he was taken off for Anthony Elanga.

"Can we stop the experiment of playing Bruno out of position to accommodate Van de Beek please?" fan page, United Peoples TV, asked.

"Garnacho has done more is 3 1/2 games than Donny van de Beek in 3 years! CRAZY!" the Football Terraces Terry Flewers noted.

Another fan cruelly added, "Van De Beek literally should have simply wore an Aston Villa Jersey I swear."

"Let’s be real here - Donny Van De Beek just isn’t very good at football (at this level)," a fourth added.

ESPN's Rob Dawson used a shocking stat to show how poor the Dutchman had been in the first half in particular, posting, "Van de Beek has had seven touches in 30 minutes. Villa have barely crossed the halfway line and Dubravka has had 11."

And another fan really summed up the whole performance, saying, "I actually cannot understand what van de Beek is doing right now. He’s sort of…meandering about the place."

To give him some credit, the former Ajax midfielder wasn't the only poor player in the first half, as the two sides went into the break at 0-0, with United having more offsides than the two teams had shots, combined.

However, the second half was different, with Ollie Watkins giving his side the lead, but it only lasted a couple of minutes, as Anthony Martial hit back immediately.

Villa then retook the lead through a Diogo Dalot own goal, with Van de Beek then removed and Bruno Fernandes moving back to number 10.

The change worked out as Rashford equalised before Fernandes put the hosts ahead for the first time in the game, and McTominay rounded off the scoring thanks to Alejandro Garnacho's perfect assist.
