Dwight Yorke claims THREE Man United legends would be worth more than British record signing Enzo Fernandez

Dwight Yorke has insisted that three legends from Manchester United’s treble-winning 1998-99 squad would be worth more than Chelsea new boy Enzo Fernandez in today’s market.

Fernandez’s stock value soared after his display for Argentina at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with the Chelsea star scooping the Best Young Player award.

The 22-year-old Argentine midfielder was heavily linked with Chelsea in the January transfer window amid interest from Europe’s elite clubs.

Chelsea splashed out an eye-watering £107m fee to sign Fernandez from Benfica, with the World Cup winner inking an eight-and-a-half-year deal.

The fee the Blues put up for Fernandez eclipsed the staggering £100m deal that Manchester City made to sign Jack Grealish from Aston Villa in 2021.

Despite Fernandez becoming a British record signing, Chelsea have attracted criticism over the astonishing transfer fee they paid to Benfica last month.

Sir Alex Ferguson broke United’s then-record transfer fee to bring Yorke to Old Trafford in a £12.6m deal from Aston Villa in 1998.

Yorke forged an incredible strike partnership with Andy Cole and went on to play an integral role in the Red Devils’ historic treble-winning season.

Speaking to OLBG, the 51-year-old ex-striker insisted that Cole, David Beckham and himself would all be worth more than Fernandez if they were playing now.

“I like to think I’d be worth more than Enzo Fernandez in today’s market,” Yorke said.

“Andy Cole, David Beckham and I were goal scorers, creators, fast and all the ingredients in a player that you would want.

“It’s easy to say that, but when I watch football nowadays and see how much players are sold for, I can't help but think about what I would be worth.

“I like to think that I would be up there with the biggest transfers, Becks and Cole would be the same.”
