Lionesses’ Earnings For Euro 2022 Is Same As Cristiano Ronaldo’s Daily Pay At Manchester United

Lionesses’ Earnings For Euro 2022 Is Same As Cristiano Ronaldo’s Daily Pay At Manchester United

England got their hands on the Euro 2022 trophy after beating Germany in the final.

Members of the Lionesses squad will each get £55,000 for winning the Euro 2022 tournament, which is the same amount as Cristiano Ronaldo earns per day.

The prize package was pre agreed between the team and the Football Association and the bonus for lifting the trophy was set at £55,000.

Though not a small amount, it is only a small fraction of Ronaldo’s mammoth wage at Manchester United. The five time Ballon d’Or winner is on a reported £385,000 a week. That equates to £55,000 each day.

The bonus handed to Sarina Wiegman’s team is also extremely small compared to what Gareth Southgate’s men's team would have got.

Southgate’s squad was promised £300,000 just for reaching the final, and they would have got £460,000 if they had won last year’s final against Italy at Wembley

Last weekend, Women in Sport spoke about their disappointment in the bonus pay gap: “Why shouldn’t we ask for equal prize money and pay? We are already seeing this across tennis and cricket. This expresses and demonstrates the value that these teams bring to sport.

“Increased investment is vital across every level of women’s sport. For girls to realise their aspirations they need a place to do this on their doorsteps. This should be the legacy of the Euros.”

A spokesperson for the FA has since said: “The FA pays its women’s players exactly the same as their male counterparts for representing England, both in terms of match fees and match bonuses. This parity has been in place since January 2020.”

While this is a matter to be solved off the pitch, the Lionesses showed all their qualities on the pitch as they battled past a stubborn Germany side to win England’s first major trophy since 1966.

Goals from substitutes Ella Toone and Chole Kelly helped England edge Germany 2-1 after extra time.

Manager Wiegman said after the match: “It was so tight but who cares.

“We won 2-1 and we are European champions. If you really want to win and become better every single day, that’s what I have noticed the whole year. It’s been incredible. We agreed a couple of things on behaviours, they weren’t just words, we lived it. And this is the result.”
