Jamie Carragher has called Richard Keys “a sad desperate man” after the beIN Sports presenter criticised the former Liverpool defender’s opinion on England managers.
The former defender aired his views after a few high-profile foreign managers, including the likes of Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino, were linked with the England job in the last few weeks.
Carragher wrote on his Twitter that the England job should only be offered to coaches that are English. A few hours later, Keys responded to the tweet.
He replied: “What sort of nonsense is this? It borders on racism. The England coach should be the best person available. England should not hide behind closed borders & minds.”

Keys’ response left Carragher unimpressed as he launched an attack on the former Sky Sports presenter. Carragher wrote: ““It borders on racism” I hope you send similar tweets to a lot of journalists who have the same opinion, or is it because I work for Sky! You are a sad desperate man @richardajkeys. Ps love the blogs.”
However, despite Keys claiming that he doesn’t agree with Carragher’s views, a fan pointed out that one of his old tweets said otherwise.
One fan replied to Carragher: “I wouldn't worry, it was only six years ago he held a different opinion…” whilst quoting a tweet written by Keys back in 2016, which said: “Big Sam is the man then! Excellent. Now we can get our game back - re-discover our English DNA. Be English - not whatever is fashionable.”

On the back of England’s heartbreaking quarter-final defeat to France in the World Cup, manager Gareth Southgate’s future is up in the air.
Despite a largely promising spell as Three Lions boss, Southgate stated that he needs time to reflect.
He told ITV: “I think after every tournament we have sat and reviewed and reflected.

“It needs a bit of time to make sure everybody makes the right decisions.”
Southgate signed a contract extension back in November 2021 and his current deal is due to expire in 2024.
