England fans are furious with Gareth Southgate's 'unforgivable' decision in USA draw

England fans are furious with an 'unforgivable' decision Gareth Southgate made in Friday evening's 0-0 draw with the USMNT.

The Three Lions are still top of Group B despite an underwhelming performance at the Al Bayt Stadium.

England will qualify for the round of 16 as long as they avoid a four-goal defeat to Wales in their final group game on Tuesday.

Southgate named an unchanged XI from Monday's 6-2 demolition of Iran, but England looked lethargic.

Supporters were left confused by one selection in particular. Mason Mount is a favourite of Southgate's and started in midfield alongside Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice.

The Chelsea star is reliable, if unglamorous in the middle of the park. On the bench again was Phil Foden, who has scored eight goals for Manchester City this season.

Foden is always willing to take a man on, with a deadly finish to boot. While the 22-year-old admits he's yet to show it in an England shirt, he's a world class talent.

At full-time, social media users criticised Southgate for choosing Mount over Foden.

One person said: "He is the reason this talented England squad will never win anything."

Another put: "This might be the worst in-game management I have ever seen."

A third tweeted: "I am flabbergasted by that decision."

While someone added: "I can understand him starting unchanged but these subs are unforgivable."

Foden didn't make it off the bench, with Jordan Henderson, Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford selected to replace Jude Bellingham, Raheem Sterling and Bukayo Saka.

Harry Kane had a chance early in the first half but saw his shot blocked by Walker Zimmerman at close range.

The USMNT did have their chances with Christian Pulisic rattling the crossbar just past the half-hour mark.

In the second half, Gregg Berhalter's men grew in confidence. Harry Maguire was England's standout performer, heading away crosses in the latter stages.

At full-time, Kane said: "It wasn't our best performance. We had some good spells but didn't quite have the final product today. A great clean sheet puts us in a great position in the group."
