England draw 0-0 with USA at the World Cup

England draw 0-0 with USA at the World Cup

England held to a goalless draw against USA.

England were held to a goalless draw with USA in their second group stage match of the World Cup.

The Three Lions opened their World Cup campaign with a resounding 6-2 win over Iran on Monday.

But they were unable to collect all three points against USA, drawing 0-0 the Al Bayt Stadium on Friday.

England looked sluggish and failed to create many opportunities, with Christian Pulisic hitting the crossbar in the first half.

The introductions of Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford provided some impetus, but England still couldn't find the back of the net in the second half.

England still haven't defeated USA at the World Cup, having lost to them in 1950 and drawing 1-1 in 2010.

Speaking after the game, Harry Kane said: "It wasn't our best performance. We had some good spells but didn't quite have the final product today. Great clean sheet, puts us in a great position in the group.

"Just needed to be clinical, a complete contrast to Iran. Today we had two, three good opportunities but didn't put them away.

"We know we can play better than that, but it is a draw in a World Cup - no game is easy. I think after the first game people thought we'd landslide every team we'd play but that is not the case."

Jamie Carragher hailed the showing of Harry Maguire as he believes a draw was a fair result.

He tweeted: "A draw was a fair result, the energy of Adams & Mckennie was excellent & Pulisic showed his class at times. Harry Maguire was superb for England. No Foden."

Michael Owen questioned Southgate's lack of substitutions.

On Twitter, he wrote: "Astonished that we’ve used 14 players so far yet our most talented player is still sat on the bench."

England remain at the top of Group B, with four points on the board, one point ahead of second-placed Iran, who beat Wales 2-0 earlier today.

Gareth Southgate's side resume their Qatar venture next Tuesday when they face Wales, while USA take on Iran.
