Gary Neville slammed for "hypocritical" comments about Liverpool star after England draw

Gary Neville has been accused of hypocrisy by Liverpool supporters after he called for Trent Alexander-Arnold to be used by England manager Gareth Southgate against the United States.

England and the USA played out a drab goalless draw on Friday night, with Southgate's side lucky to come away with a point.

England struggled to create chances throughout the match and were second-best for long periods of the game.

After the match, Neville claimed Southgate should have brought on Liverpool right-back Alexander-Arnold and Manchester City forward Phil Foden, who could have provided a greater attacking threat.

"We've got a couple of talents there stuck on the bench in Trent Alexander-Arnold and Phil Foden," Neville told ITV Sport.

"Alexander-Arnold has got some of the best deliveries you’ll ever see from a full-back.

"Just down that right-hand side, in that second half – I thought when [Marcus] Rashford came on, he had [Jordan] Henderson there and [Kieran] Trippier, so he was blocked a little bit from getting the deliveries you want.

"I think those two not coming off the bench was a little bit disappointing. If you're going to try and win the game, they're world-class talents."

Neville's comments come just weeks after he described Alexander-Arnold as a potential defensive liability – claiming Southgate might not "trust" the Liverpool man in World Cup knockout games.

Liverpool fans unhappy with Neville

Some Liverpool supporters have now accused Neville of hypocrisy over his post-match comments.

"Neville u-turning on Trent and saying he would start for Spain, France and Brazil is so hypocritical," posted one fan on Twitter.

"Gary Neville tying himself up in knots again claiming Trent should have been on the pitch a week after he said he wouldn't trust him," added another.

While a third wrote: "Gary Neville the worlds biggest hypocrite. Before the WC man told us Trent was a liability and would cost us and now today he's complaining that Trent 'a world class talent' was left on the bench. I agree Trent or Walker should start but this man is the biggest flip flopper."

England will be hoping for a better performance when they next face Wales in their final group game on Friday.
