Gareth Southgate to make '10 changes' for England vs Italy with only one player keeping his place

Gareth Southgate is set to ring the changes for England's Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy.

Gareth Southgate is set to ring the changes for England's Euro 2024 qualifier with Italy, with only one player set to keep their place from the Australia win.

The Three Lions beat the Aussies 1-0 at Wembley Stadium courtesy of a second-half winner from Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins.

It was a largely second-string side from Southgate, who will now bring in his big guns for the clash with the European champions.

Jordan Henderson, now playing for Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, captained England on Friday but was booed off when leaving the pitch.

Southgate was annoyed by the jeers and said he could not understand them.

He told a press conference: "His role on and off the pitch is phenomenally important. He's taken the likes of Bellingham under his wing. He's a role model for the group in every part of his work.

"Some people decided to boo. I really don't understand what that's for. We play Italy here on Tuesday, come on let's get behind this team."

Henderson himself also responded and said "if people want to boo if I’m playing in a different country, that’s fine".

According to The Sun, the former Liverpool skipper is set to retain his place for the second successive game and risks another negative reaction.

It should be noted, however, that other reports claim Henderson will be on the bench for the game and Kalvin Phillips will get the nod.

But as per the newspaper, Southgate is set to make ten changes - starting in goal with Jordan Pickford returning to the sticks.

With a shortage of left-backs at the moment, Kieran Trippier is set to deputise in a defence consisting of Kyle Walker, Harry Maguire and John Stones.

Declan Rice is poised to anchor the midfield alongside Henderson, with Phil Foden, Marcus Rashford and Harry Kane selected as the front three.

10-man England beat Italy in Naples in the reverse fixture but will want to avenge the penalty shoot-out defeat in the Euro 2020 final from two years ago at Wembley.
