Kieran Trippier withdraws from England squad due to 'personal matter'

Kieran Trippier has pulled out of England's squad on the eve of their Euro 2024 qualifier against North Macedonia.

Trippier, 33, featured in Friday's 2-0 win over Malta at Wembley, playing the full 90 minutes at right-back for Gareth Southgate's side.

But he will play no part in their next Euro 2024 qualifier against North Macedonia at the Toše Proeski Arena in Skopje on Monday night.

England announced on Sunday morning that Trippier would not make the trip.

"@trippier2 has departed the #ThreeLions camp, owing to a personal matter and will not travel to North Macedonia," read a statement posted on X.

"22 players are out for today's session at @SpursOfficial's training ground ahead of our final #EURO2024 qualifier," it added.

Newcastle confirmed in their own statement that Trippier had withdrawn from the squad because of a "personal matter".

England had already booked their place at Euro 2024 prior to Friday's lacklustre 2-0 win over minnows Malta.

The Three Lions took the lead at Wembley through an Enrico Pepe own goal in the eight minute.

But they struggled to create chances after their opener and had to wait until the 75^th minute for captain Harry Kane to double their lead with a well-worked goal.

Declan Rice thought he'd scored a third for England shortly after but his goal was controversially ruled out for offside.

After the match, England manager Southgate admitted his side "didn't get going".

"It was a game where we didn't start well and I have been in football for a long time and know that if you don't start well then it's hard to pick the game up," said Southgate.

"We got a goal out of nothing really but the quality on the ball is not normally at that level and it was one of those days where the players knew they could win the game at a canter and we didn't really extend ourselves as much as we normally would.

"They are playing so many matches and have done such a brilliant job, so I am not going to hammer them for that.

"We know we should have been better than we were but it was one of those days where we didn’t really get going."
