"In a few days..." - Fernandez responds to transfer rumours amid Man Utd, Liverpool and Real Madrid links

Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez has attempted to cool the speculation linking him with a move away from the club in January.

Fernandez, 21, continues to be linked with Manchester United, Liverpool and Real Madrid after playing a starring role for Argentina at the World Cup in Qatar.

The midfielder was named the young player of the tournament as Argentina were crowned world champions for a third time with victory over France in the final earlier this month.

Even before the start of the tournament Fernandez was being linked with a move away from Benfica, who he only joined from River Plate during the summer.

His impressive performances in Qatar, which included a goal against Mexico in the group stage, have only increased the interest in the midfielder.

But Fernandez insists his only focus is on Benfica and not a potential January transfer.

Speaking to fans in Argentina, Fernandez said: "I don't know anything about [a transfer].

"It's up to my agent, I don't want to get involved. I'm focused on Benfica, in a few days we have an important game."

Newcastle also linked with Fernandez

Benfica are reluctant to sell Fernandez midway through the season, with the club currently top of the Primeira Liga and on course for the title.

Reports in Portugal claim Benfica have already turned down an initial £88m offer from an unnamed club for Fernandez.

Portuguese newspaper A Bola, as reported by the Daily Mail, claim that Newcastle are believed to be behind the bid.

And Benfica are fearful that the Saudi-backed club will be able to trigger a £105m release clause in Fernandez's current contract.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was asked about Fernandez after the World Cup, and replied: "I'm aware of him, and I know him.

"But I think the transfer fee might be quite lumpy."
