Erik Ten Hag Gives Brutally Honest Assessment Of Harry Maguire Booing

Maguire got booed in Australia during Manchester United's game with Crystal Palace, but went on to have a great game.

Erik Ten Hag has given a very honest answer to the booing of Harry Maguire, after the Manchester United captain was given a poor reception in

Maguire's travails at United are well documented and last season there were calls from all over the place for him to lose the captaincy, with even Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies bizarrely joining in.

It was expected for some time that Ten Hag would take the armband off the centre back this season, but the new manager decided to stick with the £80 million man.

That decision didn't seem to have the whole backing of the crowd in Australia earlier this week, as United continued their pre season tour.

Maguire was booed throughout the first half of the game against Crystal Palace, having also made a mistake in the game against Melbourne Victory.

Ten Hag was asked about the booing during his press conference on Friday morning, and the manager's solution was pretty simple in fairness.

"We heard but you see, if you perform, it slows down," the 52-year-old said.

" The team and Harry impressed by the way we play."

Maguire's performances haven't exactly always been brilliant, especially considering the former Leicester City defender's price tag.

The manager obviously knows that if the performances do get better then fans will no doubt stop booing him and instead cheer the player.

He had a good start to shutting the dissenters up as well, putting on a brilliant performance in the game against Palace, as United won 3-1.

The team have been extremely impressive in attack over the summer, scoring 11 goals in three games, and on Friday the manager said, "I am really happy with the performance of midfield and offence at this moment. But you need more options. It is vital if you want success, the season is really long, but we have time to fill that in."

The other option could be Ajax forward Antony, who has been strongly linked with the club, but Liverpool have reportedly also been linked with Brazilian.
