Erling Haaland Premier League GOAT talk has been branded 'sensationalist nonsense'

Erling Haaland Premier League GOAT talk has been branded 'sensationalist nonsense'

After scoring 15 goals in his first nine Premier League games, some fans are getting a tad carried away

Erling Haaland looks destined to break just about every Premier League goalscoring record right now.

Having bagged 15 goals in just nine EPL games for new club Manchester City, some fans are already crowning him the best striker in Premier League history.

However, one critic isn't having any of it. Celebrity Manchester United fan Mark Goldbridge has described such talk as 'sensationalist nonsense', with the host of The United Stand wanting to see more from Haaland first.

The Norwegian international could hardly have done more to impress in the opening months of the season, but as Goldbridge observes, longevity is key when it comes to crowning the EPL's best ever forward.

Currently, Thierry Henry and Alan Shearer are widely regarded as the two goalscoring GOATs of the Premier League era. Having scored 436 Premier League goals between them, it's fair to say Haaland still has a ways to go before he can compare in terms of sheer numbers alone.

Goldbridge recently explained to TalkSPORT why Haaland isn't in the conversation just yet, stating: “I don’t agree with this is the best Premier League side ever, I don’t agree with the title race is over."

"I don’t agree with Erling Haaland is the best striker we’ve ever seen in the Premier League because I just think that is sensationalist nonsense that does no service to the history of this great league."

“It was very, very obvious that when you bring a striker that can do everything, is powerful, is quick, can score with both feet, outside [of the foot], in[side of the foot], and head – of course he’s going to be a success in that Manchester City side.”

In spite of the strong start to the season Manchester City have made, and the fact that they have Haaland spearheading their attack, the YouTuber believes that the title race is far from over.

Goldbridge added: “I genuinely think you could put Che Adams up front from Southampton and he’d score goals. That’s how good that team is.

“They’re fantastic [City] but I completely disagree that the league is over. I did predict Man City would win the league but if Arsenal win [against Liverpool] they’re still top.”

Indeed, while Manchester City are in sparkling form of late, it should be noted that they still aren't top of the Premier League just yet. Arsenal returned to the summit following a 3-2 win over Liverpool on Sunday, edging ahead of Pep Guardiola's side by a single point.

After beating Manchester United 6-3 last week, City themselves will face off against Liverpool next weekend in what will be another big test of their title credentials.

Will Haaland bag against the Reds, and if so, how many? Let us know what you think.
