Portugal Under-21 manager Rui Jorge revealed the “hurtful” message he received from Liverpool star Fabio Carvalho.
Last week Carvalho mysteriously made himself unavailable for Portugal’s Under-21 double-header against the Czech Republic and Japan.
Though no official reason was given for the decision, it led to speculation as to whether Carvalho had chosen to represent England at international level over A Seleção.

However, Jorge has now shed some light on Carvalho’s withdrawal.
“Hurtful” message”
Jorge claimed that Carvalho made himself unavailable for international duty by sending a text message.
According to a fresh report from Cabine Desportiva, the Portugal boss was left “hurt” after learning the news.

Jorge told the Mirror: “Being in the Under-21s no longer brings any benefit.
“We are from different generations, I know, but I thought he would call and that we could talk.
“I make a point of telling all the players that only I want in this space anyone who really wants to be here.”

Carvalho for England?
The Liverpool midfielder was called up for Portugal's Under-21 European Championship qualifiers earlier this year having previously represented England at various age groups.
Carvalho was born in Lisbon and was part of the Benfica youth set-up before moving to London as an 11-year-old in 2013.
The starlet subsequently captained the Three Lions at under-17 level.

However, England were unable to select him for under-21 duty as the youngster did not possess an English passport.
Carvalho's decision to turn his back on Portugal has sparked hope that the former Fulham star could perform a U-turn and represent England again in the future.
