Jose Mourinho Says He Was Upset At Dele Alli After Stoke Goal

Jose Mourinho said he was upset at Dele Alli for the midfielder's role in Stoke City's equaliser on Wednesday evening, after Dele couldn't hide his frustration at being subbed off.

Whilst Mourinho has been good for Spurs' results on the pitch generally and many of the players have responded well to his arrival, Alli is the one who hasn't done so well out of it.

The former Manchester United manager often freezes out at least on previously important first team player when he arrives at a club and it's been no different since his return to London to take over at Spurs just over a year ago.

On Wednesday Dele started his first game since November 26th as the side took on Stoke in the Carabao Cup quarter final.

After Gareth Bale's first half opener, the visitors equalised in the second half through Jordan Thompson and, after the game, the boss said he was upset with his midfielder for giving the ball away in the lead up to the goal.

"They caught us on the counter attack so, yes, I was upset. A player that plays in that position has to be a player that links and creates, not one that creates problems for his team on the counter attack.

"In that situation, when they were able to counter attack behind our defence, we were unbalanced. Our full-backs were wide and one midfielder was also out of position."

The former MK Dons player wasn't given much time to undo his error as he was taken off shortly after, being replaced by Erik Lamela.

It was very clear that the 24-year-old wasn't happy at all with the decision, as he displayed his anger and kicked out at equipment as he made his way into the stands.

Whilst Alli was clearly unhappy with the decision to remove him, it clearly worked for Mourinho, with Spurs going on to win the match.

Ben Davies scored in the 70th minute before Harry Kane guaranteed their passage into the semi-finals with a goal in the 81st minute.

Spurs will face another Championship side in Brentford for the chance to play in the final at Wembley.
