Argentina winger Angel Di Maria was "p**sed off" about having to play under Louis van Gaal and told those close to him how much he despised playing for Man United, according to a new report.
Di Maria arrived at Old Trafford for just under £60 million in 2014 but, despite one or two bright signs early on, his short stint at the club quickly proved a massive disappointment.
A new story on The Athletic about Van Gaal's struggles in Manchester highlights just how much the player loathed life at the club after leaving Real Madrid.
"Di Maria was p**sed off because of the positions he was played in and the rules [restrictions] placed on his game," a source says. "He would tell his friends, 'I don't want to be at United.'"
Even withstanding his issues with the manager, Di Maria just never seemed to fit in. A burglary attempt on his home unsettled him - understandably - but he is also described as "not the bravest player" and "lightweight" by sources close to the club at the time.
The ill-feeling between player and club are ongoing to this day. When PSG played at Old Trafford in the Champions League last year, Di Maria appeared to swear at home supporters after assisting the opening goal in a 2-0 win.
United fans had given their former record signing a negative reception, as you might expect, but the 32-year-old seems to feel an equal amount of contempt for his ex-employer.
His PSG teammate Marcin Bulka told FootTruck earlier this year that Di Maria rushes for the remote if he even catches United on TV.
"Di Maria hates Manchester United," said the goalkeeper. "He has no good memory of the time he spent there.
"In fact, when something related to Manchester United appears on television, he changes the channel quickly."
Although he's been more diplomatic in public, Di Maria has also shared his thoughts on why his time at the club went sour so rapidly.
"I didn't get on very well with the coach, so I think the decision to join Paris was the best solution," he told Le Parisien after his 2015 departure. "After [the break-in] it wasn't reasonable to stay. My family wasn't happy. My daughter was suffering. So it was important to leave.
"Honestly, we were not happy... Life in England was a bit difficult. It is not easy for a South American. Some people get on fine, and for others it is harder to adapt."
It's certainly true that Di Maria isn't the first overseas player to struggle to fit in at a Premier League club. But it's also safe to say that neither player nor club would be keen to give it a second chance at any point whatsoever.
