Liverpool legend Dietmar Hamann has said Manchester United's start to the season has been 'pathetic' and that Ole Gunnar Solskjær is treading on thin ice.

The 48 year old, who won two FA Cups, two League Cups, a UEFA Cup and the Champions League whilst at Anfield, says The Red Devils are overly reliant on certain players and don't play in a manner that is easy on the eye.

"The one and only reason why Manchester United are still in the title race and doing alright in the Champions League is Cristiano Ronaldo," Hamann told Sky Sports, as quoted by Metro. "I don't know where they would be without him or his goals. It is all patchwork. Old Trafford, that used to be the Theatre of Dreams, now it is more like the Theatre of Nightmares.

"Their performances are pathetic. At the moment, they just don't play good football. Jadon Sancho is way behind expectations, which I don't understand. With Varane they got a player with great experience and in Ronaldo they got one who knows the Premier League and I didn't think it would take long to integrate him into the team.

"They still play the same football which is not good to watch. That is not Manchester United."

Hamann, who also played for the likes of Bayern Munich, Newcastle United and Manchester City, believes these problems will force manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær out of the club sooner rather than later.

"Now I believe the pressure on the manager will grow a lot," he continued. "I believe it is a matter of when - not if - they sack him, because he has been there too long for you not to see any progression.

"I think there will be a change of manager soon. Whether the new manager will be able to utilise their potential, we will have to see.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjær is not capable of that right now."

The Norwegian has dismissed claims he's not up to the job in recent weeks and says he's the man who can take this squad forwards

"I'm very confident that we will get the best out of this squad," Solskjær claimed following the 1-1 draw with Everton on Saturday. "A lot has happened this month and we've had Raphaël [Varane] and Jadon [Sancho] with us since August, and Cristiano [Ronaldo] since September.

"We've got loads to work on and we need to improve, we know that and I know that, but I do believe in this group of players and the coaching staff that I've got. So, the short answer is yes."

Next up for The Red Devils is a tricky trip to the East Midlands after the international break to take on Leicester City.
