Cristiano Ronaldo has been revealed as the top scorer of the decade - edging out Lionel Messi by just one point.

The 35-year-old enjoyed a wild amount of success with Real Madrid and Juventus at club level as well as Portugal on the international stage.

Individually, he managed to register an astonishing 550 goals and it means he places ahead of longtime rival Messi, who finished with 549 goals.

Closest to the duo is Robert Lewandowski, who still scored over 100 less goals than them with 417.

'CR7's' goalscoring exploits will likely be why he was named 'Player of the Century' at Dubai's Globe Soccer Awards last month.

After receiving the award he said: "For 20 consecutive years I have played and scored as a professional, I didn't know there was another record to beat.

"It's a pleasure to hear about the records, I have achieved all this but without my team-mates, without a great team, I would not have achieved these records."

Messi, meanwhile, paid tribute to his legendary rivalry with Ronaldo in an interview with DAZN.

"The one with Cristiano Ronaldo was and is a special duel, which will remain forever," he said. "It lasted many years and it is not easy to maintain certain levels for a long time.

"Our teams were also very demanding: Real Madrid and Barcelona, the two strongest clubs in the world. Competing as equals for so many years is something that will remain forever.

The duel between me and Cristiano Ronaldo was very good on a personal level and I think people enjoyed it."
