Harry Kane Accused Of ‘Manipulating Referees’ By Danny Murphy After Controversial Penalty Against Brighton

"Why can’t referees have the intelligence and common sense to see through it," said former Liverpool man Murphy.

Harry Kane has been accused of 'manipulating referees' after the striker won another controversial penalty at the weekend.

Tottenham striker Kane earned and scored a spot-kick against Brighton in a 2-1 victory for the hosts.

But the hitman has since been accused of diving and conning officials by going to ground too easily.

Pundits have suggested he was 'looking' for the penalty against the Seagulls by backing into Adam Lallana and falling to the floor and allege he tries to influence officials with his antics.

Another incident came later in the match with Brighton, when the England captain and Heung-min Son both dived within the space of 10 seconds.

Former Liverpool star Danny Murphy was unimpressed, telling talkSPORT: "It's something so many forwards do now which is using the inefficient refereeing and the rules to get penalties.

"I don't want to see it. They're all doing it, they're all cheating, they're all manipulating the referee - you can use what word you want.

"And it's not going to stop, because you don't get penalties if you don't go down! Actually, the only way you're going to stop it is if defenders stop doing stupid tackles. You can't go in for a tackle in the box, you've just got to stand your ground.

"But why can't referees have the intelligence and common sense to see through it? They can see they've over-exaggerated, they've overdone it, they've dived and after the event, delayed, they've thrown themselves to the ground - don't give the penalties!"

It's not the first time Kane has been criticised in this way. Arsenal legend Ian Wright said Kane tried to deceive the referee during a North London derby last season with the forward instead booked for simulation.

"What Harry Kane did was step across, initiate the contact and go over," said Wright on Match of the Day. "It's simulation. It's cheating. I'd rather call it that. That's all it was."

Kane wasn't the only one under the spotlight for winning a debatable penalty over the weekend, with Tony Cascarino slamming Mohamed Salah for his 'dive' against West Ham.
