Premier League Strikers Ranked From ‘GOAT’ To ‘Not A Footballer’

Premier League Strikers Ranked From ‘GOAT’ To ‘Not A Footballer’

Current forwards in England's top flight: from goal machines to total flops.

Sergio Aguero has been named the greatest Premier League striker ever, while Gabriel Jesus, Anthony Martial and Roberto Firmino are labelled 'Overrated'.

SPORTbible used TierMaker to rank current outright strikers and, while Aguero has had injury issues this season, he is the Premier League's deadliest ever finisher. No forward can match his astonishing ratio of a goal every 106 minutes.

Harry Kane, who recently joined Aguero in the 150 Premier League goals club, is in the next tier down. The Spurs star is 'Elite' alongside Jamie Vardy, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Marcus Rashford and Timo Werner (early days, but the Germany international is showing his class).

But controversially labelled 'Overrated' are Jesus, Martial and, yes, even Bobby Firmino.

None of them are bad players. But Liverpool's Firmino has definitely fallen into the category of being called "underrated" so often, he's become slightly overrated. Yes he's unselfish, but how hard is it really when Mo Salah and Sadio Mane are either side of you?

Jesus hasn't quite developed into the Aguero replacement Man City hoped he'd be yet, while Martial is a frustration. The Man United striker looks world class on his day, but remains inconsistent.

On the other side of the coin, Olivier Giroud is a long-time 'Underrated' player. A selfless link-up man with 86 Premier League goals, Arsenal and Chelsea both casually chuck Giroud aside despite his ability to score worldies out of nowhere. Harsh.

Michail Antonio is also labelled 'Underrated' having developed into a fine forward, as is Wolves' Raul Jimenez who plenty of people rate but still not highly enough for us. This No 9 can do it all.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Danny Ings and simply 'Good' for now, however both are performing so superbly they're on the verge of smashing upwards through the tiers.

Elsewhere, 'Poor' contains some real forward flops of the Premier League era. Wesley at Aston Villa, Joelinton at Newcastle, Islam Slimani at Leicester - no. Sebastien Haller has shown flashes at West Ham but not enough to justify the reported £45 million transfer fee.

Without wishing to be cruel, Andy Carroll and Christian Benteke are bottom. Carroll is more than just a goalscorer, of course. But he hasn't netted in 22 league games since Newcastle re-signed him in 2019. His last Premier League goal came in April 2018, back when Arsene Wenger was still Arsenal boss, and Huddersfield Town and Cardiff City roamed England's top tier.

Benteke is a mystery. A striker with 38 caps (and 15 goals) for Belgium currently playing like he'd struggle to get into a San Marino XI. Poor lads, let's hope they both find their shooting boots ASAP and shut us right up.
