Xavi threatened to resign as Barcelona manager on the spot if one transfer was sanctioned

Xavi threatened to resign as Barcelona manager on the spot if one transfer was sanctioned

Xavi will leave Barcelona at the end of the 23/24 season.

Barcelona manager Xavi reportedly threatened to quit if the club sanctioned one transfer.

It was a relatively quiet window for Barcelona as they didn’t manage to bring in any new signings.

The Catalan club have had a tough season so far as they currently sit fourth in the La Liga table, 10 points behind leaders Real Madrid.

Last week, it was also announced that manager Xavi will leave the club when the 23/24 season comes to a close.

He said: “I want to announce that on June 30 I will no longer continue as the coach at Barça. I think the situation needs to change course, and as a culer, I cannot allow the current situation.”

However, it has now been reported that Xavi would have handed his resignation notice earlier if Barcelona had sold defender Ronald Araujo.

According to The Athletic, via One Football, Xavi threatened to resign if the move went through.

It was claimed that German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich were prepared to pay €80 million to sign the Uruguayan from Barcelona.

However, after Xavi gave his opinion on the deal, the transfer failed to materialise.

After failing to sign Araujo, Bayern switched their attention to Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier, who ended up moving to Bavaria.

Explaining his decision to leave the club, Xavi said: “We have reached a point of no return. It's time for change. As a Culé, I think that it's time to leave. I spoke with the board and the club today. I will leave on the 30th of June.

“Everything will be calmer now, we can compete for the Champions League… at least with this decision you [the press] won’t kill me anymore. The club will improve with this decision.”

Barcelona are back in La Liga action on Saturday as they take on Deportivo Alaves at the Estadio Mendizorroza.
