Richard Keys criticises Jamie Carragher for being 'drunk on air' during CBS Sports interview with Jadon Sancho

Richard Keys criticises Jamie Carragher for being 'drunk on air' during CBS Sports interview with Jadon Sancho

Jamie Carragher said he was 'slurring' his words while speaking to Sancho after drinking eight pints.

Jamie Carragher's post-match antics after the Champions League semi-final clash between Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain have been slammed by Richard Keys.

The former Liverpool defender, who was on presenting duty for CBS Sports on Wednesday night, could be seen downing a pint of beer as he mingled with supporters before kick-off.

“We are at Signal Iduna Park with all of the Dortmund fans," Carragher said. "They absolutely adore me. Come on, let’s get a picture! And I’m going to get a pint. I need a drink to cool me down, to calm my nerves for the big game.”

Shortly after that segment, Carragher made his way to the famous 'Yellow Wall' and claimed to have sunk "about eight pints" as in-form striker Niclas Fullkrug scored a first-half winner.

It didn't take long for the 46-year-old to get involved in the action on American network CBS. In fact, he conducted an interview with Player of the Match Jadon Sancho alongside a far-more-sober Peter Schmeichel.

In the segment, CBS Sports host Kate Abdo asked him if he was sober enough to conduct an interview. "You know what, that is a fair point because I haven't had too much to eat," he replied. "I've had a cheeseburger at about half two."

Carragher added: "It might explain why I am slurring my words. I've had about eight pints in the Yellow Wall! I've got a new family, a family of friends, we all look after each other, I gave them a few bob after half time."

After the moment went viral on social media, former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys responded to a news story that claimed Carragher caused "hilarity" with the interview.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, he wrote: "Drunk on air = hilarious? I don’t think so. Ask families who’re cursed with relations who are damned by the illness that is alcoholism if they think this kind of behaviour is ‘hilarious'."

Last month, Keys criticised Carragher for a comment he made to presenter Kate Abdo on the show.

"I think Kate Abdo is a top pro," the beIN Sports anchor said. "I've no idea what Carragher is insinuating but he crossed the line again. How many more times? That show is like so many more these days - too 'pally'.

He added: "It was an accident waiting to happen. Abdo deserves much better."
