Cole Palmer makes Chelsea history with penalty against Burnley that'll take years to be replicated

Cole Palmer makes Chelsea history with penalty against Burnley that'll take years to be replicated

Cole Palmer has broken an impressive record at Chelsea following his goal against Burnley.

Cole Palmer has made history with Chelsea during their clash against Burnley in the Premier League this afternoon.

It's been a season to forget at Stamford Bridge - but one of the very few bright sparks for Chelsea throughout 2023/24 has been Cole Palmer.

The 21-year-old arrived on transfer deadline day from Manchester City last summer and has since gone from strength-to-strength in the starting line-up.

The £42.5 million deal is now looking like a bargain for the England international - and the record he achieved against Burnley outlines why.

Mauricio Pochettino's side, who sit in 11th place in the Premier League standings currently, hosted Burnley in London on Saturday afternoon.

After seeing an early Axel Disasi goal ruled out for offside, Chelsea were left frustrated for much of the first half. Until Mykhailo Mudryk was brought down by Lorenz Assignon in the penalty area.

As he so often has this season, Palmer stepped up to take the spot kick. With confidence beyond his years flowing through the veins of the former City man, he chipped the ball down the middle of the goal to give his side the lead in the 44th minute. Record breaker.

According to StatsMuse, Palmer is the first 21-year-old at the club to reach 20 goal involvements in one season - the youngest in Chelsea history.

Speaking to TNT Sports back in 2023, Pochettino praised his young star and compared Palmer to former Real Madrid man and World Cup winner Angel Di Maria in the process.

"In the position that he plays, and because he's a left-footer and because he has some similarities and the quality, he's a potential Angel Di Maria," he said.

"He [Palmer] has the capacity and the potential to be close to him, with time. He's still far away, but this type of player that can link, can be a playmaker, have the capacity to score, assist, it's this type of player like Angel."
